Onitron I Autoprestige is the same boat
Piero Fresi used in the double crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in
2003.
The hull is steel made and
for this new adventure the boat has been fully restuctured in the
metalworking center “Co.Mi” in Porto Torres. The hull was partially rusted and those
parts have been cut and changed. The interior has been fully emptied
and only the essential parts have been placed. Useless weight has
been avoided, like the doors of the three cabins.
The instrumentation Piero and Vittorio
decided to bring along is not much: three portable and one fixed GPS,
a radar, a radio direction finder to detect radio beacons, a sextant
and the epirb.
Their food supply is made of canned
food, freeze-dried and dehydrated food, rice and pasta put in plastic
bottles sealed with scotch tape to prevent humidity, and energy bars.
They have on board 3 gas cylinders of 10 kgs each.
The drinking water supply consists in
800 liters in 1,5 bottles loaded in the bilge. They also have a both
manually and electrically working desalinator which turns seawater
into drinking water.
To charge the batteries (3 Optima Blu
55AH) they use an aeolian generator, a solar panel, and almost every
day they turn on the engine.
They have two cameras, one of which has
an underwater box, a camcorder, a personal computer designed for
those conditions, and a the Iridium satellite phone. They also have on board one oxygen
cylinder, and full equipment to work underwater.
