2 Italian sailors rescued from stricken sail boat in South Pacific; yacht abandoned

New Zealand rescue officials say two Italian yachtsmen have been rescued from their stricken boat midway between New Zealand and Chile after spending four days adrift.
Crew of the oil tanker Hellespont Trooper have plucked Pietro Fresi and his son Vittorio Fresi from their 34-foot (10.4-meter) yacht, which was abandoned in the South Pacific Ocean.
New Zealand Rescue Coordination Center spokesman Ross Henderson says the tanker reached the pair about midnight Wednesday but strong winds and heavy seas prevented crew from rescuing the pair until daybreak Thursday.
The duo sent a mayday call early Monday when the main mast snapped and the engine failed on their Italian-registered yacht Onitron, stranding them more than 2,200 miles (3,500 kilometers) east of New Zealand.
